What is Sensory Integration?
SENSORY INTEGRATION
We experience the world through our sensory systems, which begins to develop during the early stages of pregnancy and continues throughout our life journey. The first seven years of childhood are the most influential when considering effective Sensory Integration.
Sensory integration refers to the process of integration and interpretation of sensory stimulation from the environment, by the brain. The results of which influence our body function and behaviours. Over time the messages that are being received, supports the brain to analyse and process the information and plan appropriate actions effectively and efficiently. When our sensory systems function well, we produce specific/appropriate responses to sensations and have a clear understanding of our body in relation to our surroundings and environment. We need effective Sensory Integration for developing motor capabilities, social communication, attention, concentration, and learning.
SENSORY PROCESSING
Sensory processing is our ability to recognise and organise sensory stimuli for performance and function. We interpret sensory stimuli from our bodies (internally and through our muscles and joints, head position, touch, sound, taste, smell - our nervous system then acts as a gateway and ensures that the appropriate amount of sensory stimulation for our brain is interpreted and understood. As a result this helps our body create the ideal response for everyday function.
